Chapter 18

1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The first video that I chose is El Greco: Rediscovering a Master.  The reason that I chose this video is because I wanted to learn more about  El Greco, why his work was "banished", and why he was rediscovered.  The second video that I chose is The Power of Art:Caravaggio.  I chose this video because of the title.  I read about some of Caravaggio's work but was interested in learning more about him.  The third video, Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master was chosen because it focused on the Renaissance in northern Europe.  The fourth video that I chose was The Night Watch (Rembrandt).  I chose this because I had heard about the painting and wanted to learn more.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
For the El Greco video I learned that he was a big influence on Picasso's work.  I learned more about Caravaggio's background and gained understanding about why he chose to include violence in many of his paintings.  The third video about Durer I learned about his influence on the Renaissance in northern Europe.  The fourth video that I chose was The Night Watch (Rembrandt).  I learned about the history of the painting, the damage that it has endured, and the recreation(s) of it.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
They related to the texts and provide more detailed information about the important artists of their time.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?  I think that the videos were very informative and added more depth to what we read in the book.  It was nice to learn more about the artists and their lives.

Week 8 Chapter 15

1. Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the Late Gothic Art video because that time in history is very interesting to me.  The second     video that I chose was the birth of the Middle Ages.  This is known as a dark period in history.  The third video is the Cairo Museum.  I'd love to visit this museum!

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The first video I learned that art had gotten much better by the late middle ages.  During the second  video I learned that Japan also had their version of the middle ages around the same time.  The third video didn't really teach me much but it was very interesting.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos expand on what the textbooks cover.  A lot of this was repetitive.  I didn't learn too much more than what was covered in the book.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I don't think that they added much depth this time.  I feel like it was very repetitive and time consuming.

Week 7 Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
For the Prairie Style video I learned that he is known for the way he used horizontals, and that he wanted everything to look very natural.  The second video, science of design was an interesting video.  The key concept that I learned is the concept of smart houses.  A computer that links all of the houses systems together and monitors them.  You can tell the computer when to set the alarm, when to change the home temperature and so on.  The third video's key concepts were the clashes in styles.  There were two main clashes. First there was classic architecture and victorian clashing, then there was classic vs. modernism.  The fourth video that I chose was the Imperial Rome video.  I didn't learn much from this video but it was a great visual reminder of their architectural achievements.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? All three expanded on the basics that the book covered.   The third and fourth videos were  related most closely to the readings.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?  Yes they add depth, give examples of more works, and they show more about the thought and ideas that go into each artists work.

4. From the group of four that you had a choice: Why did you choose that film? I chose this because of my interest and appreciation for Roman history and architecture.   I chose this because of my interest and appreciation for Roman history and architecture.  I didn't learn much from this video, however I enjoyed looking at many of the great buildings and it was a reminder of how advanced their culture was.

Week 6 Project

A. What is installation art?
Installation art is presented as a work of art that can be entered, explored, experienced, and reflected upon.
B. What materials are used installation art?
Any materials that the artist wants to use.
C. Why make installation art?
Artists realized that going to a museum was an experience for observers and they could use the space inside the museum (an entire room) to create artwork.
D. Which artist/installation did I find most interesting?  I like Ann Hamilton's "mantle".  It is a long narrow room with a long table covered with thousands of freshly cut flowers.

 A. From the material reviewed, is there a inspiration piece that I feel a connection with? Ann Hamilton's "mantle".  I have a long narrow space that I will utilize for my piece.

B. What theme do I want to explore in my installation? Refer to your textbook if you need to review Themes of Art. (chapter 3 in text)
(Nature, Environment, Self, Mass Media, Consumerism, etc.)

C. What materials will I use?  A shuffle board and plants.

D. Where will this installation be located and why?  In my house I have a long narrow walkway and I will use a long narrow shuffleboard table, and some plants.

2.   Description – Describe what you see.  (subject matter)?
_______A long narrow walkway with a shuffleboard table. There are plants in a line on the shuffleboard table and pucks in between the plants.  There is another plant behind the table._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3.   Formal analysis – (form)  What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
___Line is used.  The plants are in a straight line.  Shape is used with the different sized plants on top of the table.  Light is used by the shadows.  Space is used by being in between the plants. Balance because of the three different plants on the table are balanced by the large plant on the floor.  Scale because of the different sizes in the plants.  Rhythm because of the repetition of the plants._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. These are the two blogs I reviewed.

2. When looking at Project # in both blogs, I did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images. Some images had more then one element in the same photo.

3. In Project #2:,Indefinite Divisibility by Ynes Tanguy was a piece we both chose. I think it was mostly because it was an abstract piece and we weren't sure how to interpret it. I think it caught our eye because it was so strange and confusing and we both wanted to learn more about it. I wonder if that's what the artists intent was?

4. Hum by Roberto Longo caught my eye because of the bloggers description. I did not initially have the same reaction as them, but after reading it and looking back at the artwork, I can see now what the artist may have intended.

5. I'm indifferent about  the process of reading my peers reflection. It does, however, allow me to compare the quality of my work to my peers, which I suppose is positive.

6. I do find my peers comments to my blog interesting. I think it's nice to know that although we're not meeting in class every week, we're somewhat interacting via the internet.

Week 6 blog

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.  For the first video I couldn't believe the amount of time that the entire process took.  The amount of time and work to complete the piece was an eye opener.  One thing that I learned during the second video is that some ceramics are actually stronger than steel.  For the third one I enjoyed watching the creation of "coral reef" and learning what the artists thoughts were.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?  They cover the same topics however they go into more detail in showing the artwork being created.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?  I enjoy watching the videos.  The book talks about different styles and techniques but the videos show the actual process from start to finish, which makes you appreciate the amount of skill and work that is involved.
