1.Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
I chose these inspiration pieces because all the artists used a similar medium. I like the use of just pencil and charcoal opposed to the use of color for self portraits.

Self Portrait

2. Why did you select the media to create your self portrait?
I like working with pencil and I like that you are able to make different values with the same medium.

3. What challenges did you face in creating your self portrait and how did you overcome them?
I had to decide what I wanted to do with the portrait.  Did I want to make it realistic or not?  I went with realistic because It was easier for me to do.

4. How does this piece represent me?
In this picture I am just relaxing after a long day.  It shows me lounging after a hard day's work.

5. What elements and principles of design did you apply to this work?
There is texture with all of the shading.   There is also symmetry and balance mostly because faces are naturally that way.

6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
I liked it because it was the first time that I did a self portrait.

7. What did you think of your final artwork?
I thought it was pretty good.  I am not much of an artist, but I see myself in the mirror every day so this was a bit easier for me to do.

Art Criticism reflection

The three projects that I reviewed were Sin by Stephanie Kaczmierzak, Cool Blues by Kelly O’Keefe, and Nature--The Worlds Art, by Anthony Cancemi.  I chose to review Nature—The Worlds Art, by Anthony Cancemi.  The reason that I chose this piece is because of a recent trip that I took to the Grand Canyon.  This trip opened my eyes to the beauty that nature has to offer us.  I found this task difficult because I know that my project is also going to be reviewed and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.  Overall, I think that I did about a 7.5 on this project.  I found it difficult because I am critiquing a lot of really good artwork that's in an exhibit.

Week 16 video review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The Greenberg on Art Criticism video taught me about art criticism and also about Greenberg's opinion that after WWII America had an art "boom".

The Greenberg on Pollock video taught more about Pollock's history as an artist and his feelings about easel painting.

The Italian Renaissance video  taught me more about certain artists like Uccello and Masaccio.

The critics video taught me about the critics perspective on their job.  It also offered a unique perspective in that a critics comments can actually give the artist their big break.

The Colonial encounter video taught me about the 1900 World Fair and it's focus on French colonies art.  The video discussed many different cultures, however there was no connection made to its cultural meaning.  We don't know what the art means to the people.

The Jackson Pollock video was interesting because it had two critics with different opinions on Jackson Pollock and his work, however they both agree about his importance in the history of art.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
Yes it does.  It gives me more information about what a critic does and what they look for.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
Yes they do offer a lot of detail and they offered more than one critics opinion on Jackson Pollock, which was very interesting to hear.  The films were very informative.

Reflection from Project 4

This was a time consuming project.  At first, I thought that I would be able to find art that would show buildings while they were under construction so I could do a before and after but I was unable to find anything that showed actual construction.  I feel that 25 pieces of art is too many.  If it were narrowed down to 15 or less you could really focus on finding the best artwork that relates to your theme.
