Week 5 Art Gallery visit

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
1. Street Music by Norman Lewis.  This painting looks like a bunch of different stick figures dancing and moving around.  I liked it because it looks like they are having fun.
2. Cinema by George Segal.  There is a sculpture of an older man updating a sign outside of the movie theater.  The old fashion "cinema" sign and the old man made me think of the 60's or a drive-in.
3. Indefinite Divisibility by Yves Tanguy.  This is an interesting painting.  There is some device or invention on a beach.  The background is of the ocean and clouds.  It makes me want to be at the beach!  Especially this time of the year.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
1. Tam Gran by Robert Henri.  This is a portrait of an innocent looking asian woman.  She seems very plain and like a normal every day person.
2.  Number II by Charles Simonds.  He created an entire race called little people.  You never see the people, but their architecture left behind.  It looks like an ancient building and reminds me of our ancient ancestors.
3. Four Quart-er-s by Mary Bauermeister.  This is an interesting piece that shows a bunch of lenses, which makes parts of the piece enlarged and others smaller.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
1. Pictograph by Adolph Gottlieb.  This looks like something that I could have in my house.  There seems to be different boxes with different images in them.  What do they mean?  What do they represent?
2.Baby Girl by Marisol.  This is an interesting wood sculpture of a large baby with a doll.  I found the piece very interesting.  Why were the arms just drawn on while the rest of it was sculpted?
3.Self Portrait with Monkey by Frida Kahlo.  This is a self portrait of a woman with a uni-brow and a monkey.  Why wouldn't she pluck her eyebrows before making this painting?  What does the monkey represent?

Week 5 project

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
I just used my initials and tried different ways to put the letters together.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
I tried to use different thicknesses in the letters and different shapes.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
I thought that the logo looked much better in color.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The videos were informative.  I found it interesting to hear about rebranding corporate images.

Week 4 photos

Week 4

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
I thought they were fairly easy to construct. The hardest part was using the magenta to get a good red.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why? I enjoyed the paint better than the pencil because of the variation of different colors I could make.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies? I don't think I really discovered anything, though it was nice to create something on my own.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos? It was nice to see an example of what I was supposed to do, especially in the color wheel since I have never worked with paint before.

Week 3 Photo Bucket

The link above is for my week 3 photo project.  It was a challenge to get all 15 elements and principles since it was disgusting all week!  The pictures that I took were from around the house and one is looking in my backyard.  Let me know what you think.

Week 3

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.  The way that colors are used together can represent all feelings.  For example contrasting colors next to each other can make something look awful and represent bad feelings.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why? We don't see things, we see light.  When light strikes an object some of the colors strike our eyes.  I find it fascinating to look at it this way because I wonder what the human eye might not actually see.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions? In Van Gogh's painting he used contrasting colors to show his displeasure for the cafe.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?  I liked how it explained more about The Renassaince.  This showed a rebirth of knowledge and a shift in human consciousness

Week 2

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For the Carta video Changeux ties in human evolution to art's evolution.  He also analyzes the human brain and it's responses to different feelings such as aesthetic judgement and surprise.  He looks at different parts of the brain and points out where the brain's activity is during these feelings.  Ramachandran gave a much better presentation. He also talks a lot about the brain and its responses to different feelings.  I really liked his analogy of the birds beak and our reaction to works of abstract art.  With the Aesthetics Philosophy of the Arts video I learned about the history of the philosophers all the way back from Plato to the present time.  I also learned about their contributions to Aesthetics.

2. Which philosopher's theory on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosophers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.  I think that Kant's theory on Aesthetics seemed to be important.  His time in history was the late 1700's and his contribution to aesthetic theory lies in his judgment of beauty and that he had influenced romanticism.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?  Ramachandran really made it easy for me to understand his view on Aesthetics.  He talks about the brain's reaction to real life events and compares them to our brain's response to while looking at art.  I really liked how Changeux tied in the evolution of humans and the evolution of art.  They both go so far to look at the brain's activity and responses to looking at art.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?  They expand on aesthetics and give a much more detailed history of it and identify the important philosophers in history and their different theories on aesthetics.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?
I think that they added a lot of depth and gave much more specific detail on Aesthetics.  I also think that they were too long and, other than Ramachandran, were very boring.  I would have preferred to read the material and feel that I could have processed it much better if I read it.  I also found it very difficult to understand Changeux.
